Outside In and Nature of Things

2026 - New York, NY

Architect: F.O.G. Architecture

The lighting for the project serves as a unique experiential journey focused on the relationship of the human body to the horizon. The lighting for Outside In originates from ‘the sky’ via abstract glowing oculi cut into the ceiling of the space. As a counter, the lighting for Nature of Things originates from ‘the earth’ via a continuous grazing uplight along the space’s walls.

As these two spaces merge into one, the experience of the lighting becomes kneaded together with a combination of both earth and sky. The café becomes the culmination of this journey, where an illuminated stretched fabric ceiling is combined with a perimeter of uplit translucent glass.

Both in the café and in the fragrance space, the lighting is completely immersive in quality, allowing the spaces to change in color, warmth, and intensity. This allows these spaces to serve as a backdrop for special product releases, public events, or an experiential oasis from the intensity of the city outside.

The fragrance room is not limited to the experience of just the olfactory sense as its name might entail. The lighting in the space also allows for a completely immersive visual experience… one that embodies the three dimensionality of space as well as the fourth dimension of time.

The lighting is able to evolve throughout the day according to need… in some cases mimicking the cool abstraction of daylight and in other cases warming and dimming evoking the color tone of a burning candle. In special moments, the space can even blush; saturating the space in a deep blue or an intense cyan. The color of light in the space will be curated according to the olfactory experience; an incredibly unique retail experience.
