A Street Residence
2026 - Bentonville, AR
Architect: Marlon Blackwell Architects
The lighting design for the A Street House is rooted in a direct dialogue with its defining architectural feature: the ceiling. Folding dynamically upward and downward like crisp paper, the ceiling forms a striking sculptural plane visible from both inside and out. To preserve its visual purity, TM deliberately detached the lighting from the overhead plane, allowing it to visually hover—unencumbered by additive or recessed fixtures.
In response, the design deploys an ultra-minimal wall strategy. Rather than using conventional fixtures, bare bulbs are set directly into the wall planes via flush, mud-in sockets. Their rhythmic arrangement engages the architecture with playful intentionality while retaining an effortless, relaxed character. This strategy softly grazes the faceted planes from below while delivering warm, domestic ambient light. Channelling the ethos of early Mid-Century Modernism—reminiscent of Case Study icons like the Stahl House—the illumination sits quietly beneath the dominant ceiling, letting the architecture take center stage.
