At Onyx at The Preserve, TM Light approached illumination as a medium to activate negative space. Rooted in the concept that light occupies the voids between objects, the design allows illumination to seamlessly "leak" from the seams where architectural surfaces are pulled apart.
From the exterior, the building’s form emerges from the separation of the landscape—inhabiting the tension between an elevated terrain plane and the ground below. The lighting operates in tandem with Marlon Blackwell Architects’ structural vision, casting an upward glow along the exposed vertical concrete face. At night, this elevation transforms the building into a luminous, horizontal "sliver" resting gently within the dark landscape.
Inside, this spatial relationship continues. Wherever architectural planes bypass or overlap, light emanates softly from within the resulting fissures. Rather than relying on exposed fixtures, the architectural surfaces themselves become the primary conveyors of illumination. The resulting composition is a study in warm minimalism, where hidden light reveals the structural tension, depth, and raw materiality of the space.
