For the Lever House, TM’s mandate was to seamlessly integrate a contemporary series of technologies within the Modernist Classic. This began at the urban plaza level, where TM designed and deployed a custom downlight that would adhere to the original Bunshaft-designed grid; a grid that flowed from the exterior plaza to the interior lobby without interruption. Given that this perceptual continuity from inside to out depends on a consistent aesthetic of light and form no matter the composition of the furnishings and art below the ceiling, the fixtures developed had to be both interior and exterior rated and fully adjustable to allow for complete flexibility.
